Winners of new sustainable living fund unveiled
Eight projects helping communities across England live more sustainably, reduce their carbon footprint and protect natural resources have won a share of £6m in funding.
They beat off competition from more than 100 entries for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs’ Greener Living Fund, launched in November.
One of the winners was sustainable transport charity Sustrans, which was awarded more than £1.1m.
The money will go towards extending its TravelSmart programme, which provides households with tailor-made travel information, encouraging people to walk, cycle and use public transport rather than use their car.
Thanks to the extra cash, TravelSmart will be brought to Ipswich and Broxbourne, Hertfordshire, next year, offering information packs and advice to 25,000 households.
The money will also be used on developing new nationwide online mapping on the Sustrans website.
This will show people how they can reach local parks, schools, shops and community centres on foot, by bike or on public transport.
Other winners included the National Trust, which was given £500,000, for its project on encouraging more of its supporters to eat local food that’s in season.
Membership organisation Cooperatives UK was awarded £350,000 to encourage its members and employees of cooperatives to reduce their carbon footprint.
