Transformation of Piece Hall planned
One of Yorkshire’s architectural treasures – the Piece Hall in Halifax – is to be redeveloped in a £16m plan.
Once the centre of the town’s wool industry, the transformation of the building will place it at the centre of economic and social life in Halifax.
Plans include upgrading the hall’s courtyard into a vibrant town square, the development of a heritage centre and a creative innovation centre as well as shops and restaurants.
Calderdale Council is bidding for £7m funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and it hopes work will begin on the redevelopment in 2012.
Stephen Baines, leader of Calderdale Council, said: ‘The Piece Hall is an important part of Halifax’s history and was built to house the prosperous cloth trade here 230 years ago. It would be truly fitting if it ushered in a new era of prosperity for the people of Halifax.’
Designs have been drawn up and will be on public display at Victoria Hall, Halifax, from 13-28 August.
