Striking design for new Wear bridge
Residents in Sunderland are being asked for their views on a proposed new bridge across the Wear.
Designed by local architect Stephen Spence, the bridge is part of a new route into central Sunderland to help reduce traffic congestion.
The council said that the cable stay bridge, estimated to cost £133m, could be an iconic new symbol for the city.
Last year it asked Sunderland residents for their views on the proposals for a new bridge and most respondents said that a striking design was important.
With designs in place, residents are now being asked their opinion on the proposed bridge and its approach roads. The plans are on show in the city throughout July.
If approved, work could begin on the bridge in 2012 and be completed in 2014.
