Scotland plans for zero waste
Scotland has laid out ambitious plans to become a zero waste society.
Improved recycling facilities, a focus on re-use and landfill bans are among the proposals in its Zero Waste plan.
Its plan includes the creation of around 2000 jobs in the waste industry and an aim to encourage businesses to reduce waste.
Launching a 12-week consultation on the proposals, environment secretary Richard Lochhead said: ‘This is a positive step in tackling Scotland’s waste – viewing it as a resource rather than a problem. There are major economic benefit, as well as environmental gains, to be had including creating thousands of jobs and new business opportunities.’
The Scottish government has already committed to halving its construction waste to landfill by 2012, and the Scottish Federation of Housing Association has pledged to do the same.
Scotland has a target to recycle or compost 70% of municipal waste by 2025.
