Northern Ireland housing debate opened to all
Local people across Northern Ireland are to have their say on a new vision for the future of housing.
Environmentally efficient homes and a ‘dramatic’ reduction in both homelessness and fuel poverty are among the key targets identified in the first report by the Commission on the Future for Housing in Northern Ireland.
The report looks at what an effective housing system in the year 2020 could entail and invites the Northern Ireland community to join the debate.
The commission, chaired by Lord Richard Best, outlines other factors for resolution including:
• Narrowing the gap between existing homes and housing need
• Intervention for those at risk of losing their home
• Mixed income and mixed tenure developments as ‘the norm’
• Flexible housing options to respond to changing circumstances
• Widespread provision of support and advice
Initial analysis indicates that ongoing stability in Northern Ireland is creating a genuine opportunity to create the conditions for a 'public consensus for housing'.
Input from the community is being encouraged to stimulate debate ahead of the commission’s recommendations in early 2010.
Lord Best said: ‘This is a defining moment in the development of policy and the delivery of housing in Northern Ireland.
‘Our hope is that the commission's work will contribute to achieving lasting change for the housing system in Northern Ireland.’
The consultation runs until 31 December.
