Public Engagement that Works - the Charette Process: NCI Charrette System

Organised by:Centre for Sustainable Communities (CSC) at the University of Hertfordshire
Venue: Hatfield, Hertfordshire, UK
Date: Monday, 20th September - Wednesday, 22nd September 2010

How do you design a development or devise a strategy that people will welcome, use and benefit from in the way that you had hoped when starting the project? One way is to engage stakeholders at an early stage, feeding directly into the development process- something that can be quickly achieved using a charrette. A charrette is an intensive series of meetings, presentations, and workshops during which the design team puts together a development strategy while getting feedback from the public. The feedback is key to evolving a solution that gets great buy in. The advanced NCI Charrette Management and Facilitation Certificate, awarded to participants who complete the course successfully, will equip charrette managers with the essential tools and techniques required to manage a fast paced, and constantly changing, multiple day charrette. The Centre for Sustainable Communities is working together in partnership with NCI, BRE, Turnberry Consulting and Parsons Brinkerhoff to deliver this programme. E: j.conlon@herts.ac.uk

An Appetite for Change

Organised by:Adleburgh Food and Drink Festival
Venue: Hoffmann Building, Snape Maltings, Suffolk
Date: Friday, 24th September 2010

Food – why we need to change our eating habits and how it can be done. We face a health crisis and an impending global food crisis. The United Nations warns that 1 billion people go hungry every day, while, in the developed world, excess food has produced an epidemic of obesity and diet-related conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer and behavioural problems. In the UK, poor diet costs the economy £10 billion, of which £7.7 billion consists of NHS treatments which could be avoided if UK diets matched nutritional guidelines. At the same time, the world population is increasing and natural resources, such as water, soil, oil, minerals and eco-systems, are being continuously depleted. Climate change will aggravate this unsustainable situation. We must look for solutions. This conference will point us in the right direction and contribute to the debate on how to achieve healthier and more sustainable diets, identifying practical ways to bring about change. How can your organisation survive – and thrive – in today’s uncertain environment? Risk is not just financial (in the same way sustainability is not just about financial issues) – we also need to look at organisational risk (key people leaving, lack of institutional memory) and market risk. There’s no excuse for not dealing with internal risks which you can quantify. Whilst you cannot control external risk, being forewarned allows you to cope with it. This intensive masterclass will show delegates how to structure their organisation and their systems to make the organisation more resilient, even when you don’t know the timing or nature of external risks.

Tackling Worklessness through Local Partnerships: 2nd Annual Conference

Organised by:Neil Stewart Associates
Venue: 76 Portland Place, London W1
Date: Tuesday, 26th October 2010

The new government has set out radical plans to reform the welfare system and get the estimated five million workless people back into employment. For many high-performing councils worklessness has been at the centre of their economic development, learning and social programmes. Labour markets have strong local and sub-regional variations, and it is generally agreed that local programmes drawn up by local partnerships and tailored to local needs are the way forward. However, local authorities and partners must be further incentivised to make tackling worklessness a priority, and their efforts need to be better integrated with other public services in order to address the agenda holistically. This timely conference will bring together local authorities and key partners to discuss the shifting policy landscape and share good practice around raising skills, boosting ambition and overcoming barriers to work for communities. Venue: Brighton Racecourse
Date: Tuesday, 2nd November - Wednesday, 3rd November 2010

A number of pioneering 'retrofitting' projects are currently delivering a dramatic low-carbon makeover to homes around the country in an effort to tackle climate change. Several of them will be presenting detailed case-studies and discussing their experience at Retrofit Housing 2010 sponsored by Willmott Dixon Partnerships. The projects are part of the largest publicly funded undertaking to tackle climate change in the UK's existing housing stock. Announced by the Technology Strategy Board in February this year, the eighty seven 'Retrofit for the Future' projects are comprised of partnerships between for instance, local authorities, social housing providers, contractors and architects. Their aim is to deliver warmer, more fuel-efficient homes with lower carbon emissions and running costs. With expert presentations on all aspects of retrofitting; case-studies form just part of a fully comprehensive programme at Retrofit Housing 2010 which uniquely also includes site visits to 'Retrofit for the Future' projects. A format of presentations, case studies, forums, and Q & A, will also cover issues such as technology, energy performance, the supply chain, products and procurement, training, business support, renewables, best practice, financing and innovative funding solutions for retrofitting. Amongst several key speakers to address delegates at the conference will be Housing Minister the Rt. Hon. Grant Shapps MP (invited). Others include the UK Green Building Council, Willmott Dixon, Newcastle City Council, the Energy Saving Trust, Radian, Camco, Frank Haslam Milan, Places for People, the Technology Strategy Board, Wolseley, Gentoo Green, the Sustainable Development Commission and many others.
