City of sanctuary movement showcases its success

The government recently announced cuts in its allowance to asylum seekers. But a new movement is countering this increasingly harsh environment by creating safe havens for those seeking sanctuary.

In 2007 Sheffield became the UK’s first city of sanctuary. Since then the movement has spread to a further nine cites. Similar to the Fairtrade city movement, cities of sanctuary have made a commitment to offer hospitality and support to refugees and asylum-seekers.

Rather than a political campaign, the initiative focuses on building relationships between local people and refugees.

The movement has recently launched a short film that tells its history and showcases some of the stories of friendship and hospitality that have sprung out of it.
